Appropriate Delay Time between Biposy and Curative Operation in Breast Cancer

Bae Sung-Han
Abstract
The effects on the prognosis of breast cancer of the delay between biopsy and curative operation were studied in 107 cases from Jan 1985 to Dec. 1990. We excluded cases of the unknown size of primary tumor, the inductive chemotherapy and
radiotherapy,
and the referred cases from other hospitals after curative operation. No delay had experienced by 61 cases(no delay group) and 41 cases had experienced a delay of 1 day or longer after having had a biopsy taken at a different situation(delay
group). The
delayed group was divided into two subgroups according to the duration of delay, namely a subgroup whose delay was less than 7 days and another subgroup whose delay was longer than 8 days.
The recurrence rate of the no delay group was 26%(16/16), whereas that of the delay group was 34%(16/46). The relapse free survival rate of the no delay group was superior to that of the delay group according to Kaplan Meier method.
There was no significant difference between the relapse free survival rate of no delay group and the less than 7 days. But there was significant difference of the relapes free surival rate between the no delay group and the longer than 8
days.(Kaplan-Meier method: Log-Rank 0.0048, wilcoxon 0.0036)
In the conclusion, the effects on the prognosis of breast cancer preferred immediately the curative operation if the lesion should prove to be malignant by using frozen section. The appropriate delay time between biopsy and crative operation in
the
breast cancer may be less than 7 days as soon as possible.
